Hayden Panettiere’s Family Reveals Brother Jansen’s Cause of Death
Jansen Panettiere’s family have revealed the cause of his death.
The actor and younger brother of Hayden Panettiere was found dead in his apartment in Nyack, New York over President’s Day weekend at just 28 years old. In a statement obtained by ABC News on Monday, his mother Lesley Vogel, father Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, and sister shared that, “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.” They continued, “Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” adding, “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.” They concluded, “We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support towards our family as we navigate this unthinkable loss, and ask that we be gifted our privacy during this time of mourning. We love you so much Jansen and you will be in our hearts forever.”
According to a police report obtained by People, Jansen was found in his home by a friend who was there to check up on him after he’d failed to show up to a business meeting. The friend found him “sitting upright in a chair unresponsive” and attempted to give him CPR. First responders were called to the scene and eventually pronounced him dead. According to the report, Skip had also spoken to his son the night before and thought that he “sounded okay.” The medical examiner has not yet publicly declared a cause of death.
Jansen, who was five years Hayden’s junior, was also an actor, landing roles on TV shows such as Even Stevens, Everybody Hates Chris, and The Walking Dead. His final on-screen appearance was in the 2022 movie Love and Love Not. He was also an artist, posting a number of his technicolor portraits and abstract pieces to Instagram, which he would also print onto bomber jackets, tote bags, and sneakers. Just a couple weeks prior to his death, Jansen also shared a sweet photo of his sister attempting to cut his hair, writing in the caption, “Not the first haircut she’s tried to give me.”
After news of his death broke, Jansen’s girlfriend Catherine Michie paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing, “Jansen, I met you only a year ago, but you have been my best friend and biggest fan I will never forget the first time I saw your face and the first things you said to me. Words cannot express the pain of knowing I won’t hear your laugh again.” She concluded, “I hope you find peace, and I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me most,” she continued. “The world is better because you were in it. I know we will paint together again someday. I’ll always be your sugarpop. Someone wake me up and tell me this is a dream.”
